The Guildhall School of Music & Drama Students’ Union Environmental Policy and Action Plan
The Guildhall School of Music & Dramas Students’ Union recognises the impact that its operations and membership have on the wider world.
Within the framework of the School’s Sustainability Policy and Action Plan and Carbon Reduction Strategy, the Union is committed to the continual improvement of its environmental performance in order to minimise its negative environmental impact and promote sustainable behaviour amongst its members.
This paper defines this commitment through key policy statements and the practical actions required to implement them.
The Union will:
Promote the efficient use and conservation of energy by:
-Reminding Union officers and members to switch off light switches, computer monitors and other electrical equipment through training and the use of appropriate signage
-Ensuring all banks of 3+ light switches in the SU bar are labelled to indicate which switch operates each light
-Encouraging travel by bike/ public transport by providing information and planning awareness-raising events; facilitating a car sharing ‘pool’ via the SU website forum
Minimise and control waste and promote recycling and responsible disposal by:
Using electronic records (eg circulating committee and Parliament agenda and minutes via email) wherever possible; when paper records are required, all documents should be printed ‘double-sided.’
-Recycling all waste paper, glass and plastic (from the Union bar)
-Ensuring that only ‘bags for life’ are used in the distribution of Union goods (eg freshers’ goodie bags), and that no other types of plastic bags are used
-Requiring contractors to dispose of waste responsibly, in line with School policy
Raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage the sustainable and ethical behaviour of its officers and members by:
-Informing cabinet and extended committee members of this policy, and the practical implications for their work, through induction and ongoing training
Incorporating an update on the work of the Sustainability Steering Group and upcoming environmental projects/ issues into the agenda for each Union Parliament at which feedback from members will be invited
-Updating its website (at least once a term) to include news of environmental issues and advice on sustainable and ethical behaviours
-Liaising with the Sustainability Steering Group to hold environmental awareness-raising events at least once per term to encourage, for example, energy conservation, waste reduction/ recycling, and ethical purchasing/ finance.
